10 The Eaglet ducks its head into its wet down to hide a cheeky grin after cutting the Dodo short.

11 The Dodo is still offended by the Eaglet's joke and has just proposed a "Caucus-race."
In the text → -
12 The dripping Dodo scratches the first curve of the Caucus-race on the stone floor

14 The Caucus-race is over, and everyone is quite dry again.
In the text → -
15 The Dodo sits with one feathered wing-tip pressed to his forehead, like a portrait of Shakespeare.

23 The Duck gulps its comfit as the Eaglet pats a small choking bird on the back
In the text → -
24 The Caucus-race is over and the damp party sits in a ring again on the lamplit flags.
In the text → -
25 The Mouse sighs and begins his "long and sad tale".
In the text → -
26 From above, the Mouse's long tail winds across the stone flags in shrinking bends
In the text → -
27 The Mouse stops his tale and glares at Alice for staring at his tail
In the text → -
28 Alice mishears the Mouse's angry reply as a knot and half-rises to search for it
In the text → -
29 Offended by Alice's "knot," the Mouse gets up and stalks out of the ring towards the dark corner.
In the text → -
30 The offended Mouse walks quickly away across the flags, shaking his head
In the text → -
31 At the water's edge an old Crab lectures her daughter, who snaps back at her

33 Alice glows with pride as she boasts about her cat Dinah.
In the text → -
34 Alice's praise of Dinah startles the party.
In the text → -
35 Alice's careless word about Dinah has scattered the whole party.
In the text → -
36 Alice sits alone on the cold stone flags with the thimble in her lap
In the text → -
37 Alone on the empty shore after crying for Dinah, Alice hears small footsteps far away.
In the text → -
38 After Dinah is mentioned, everyone leaves the shore of the pool of tears.
