The first assault on the block house

Captain Smollett's anger breaks out for the first time.

Quiet Joyce, the valet, whips up his musket and fires the first shot through a loophole

Through a loophole, a pack of yelling pirates charges from the woods at the stockade

Job Anderson, the boatswain, shoves his head into the middle loophole of the block house

Pirates reach the loopholes as powder smoke and pistol flashes fill the log-house

Jim runs round the corner of the block house and comes face to face with the roaring boatswain.

Jim scrambles up out of the sand after his fall.

Gray stands by the log-house in the noon sun over the giant boatswain he has cut down

As the powder smoke clears in the log-house, the doctor and Jim see what the fight cost.

The valet Joyce lies dead beneath his west loophole as dust drifts in shafts of sun

Wounded and pale, Captain Smollett stares into the thinning powder smoke and counts the odds.
