Mourning at Belrive and flight to Chamounix

The villa at Belrive stands half-shuttered and silent above the flat grey lake

Victor has no answer for his father's gentle advice.

Victor lets his boat drift in the middle of the still, starlit Lake of Geneva

Adrift on the moonlit lake, Victor leans over the side toward his own reflection

Victor stares past the camera toward Elizabeth.

In the Arve ravine, a tiny rider on a mule climbs past a ruined castle and raging river

Victor rides a mule into Chamounix as an avalanche thunders beneath Mont Blanc's dome

On the road into Chamounix, grief-worn Victor throws himself face-down on the grass

Worn out after the long ride, Victor stands at the window of the inn at Chamounix.
